Opening words from the president...
This
letter is to provide all members of the LWHS with a status
report of the Society. Our energies, for the last three
months, have been mainly directed towards two projects:
the publication of a Calendar for 2003, and the establishment
of a website.
David Beck Jr. has headed up the major project of building
the website since its inception and will be responsible
for maintaining the site. We extend our sincere gratitude
to Adam Delozier, a senior at Penn Cambria High School,
for all his technical assistance, without which we would
not have a site. We expect to be on line by November 1,
2002.
Our web address: l-whs.com
Our email address: lilly@l-whs.com
The lwhs.com home page shows the following index:
Community History - Brief history of the area as we now
know it - will be updated and corrected as research develops
Goals of the LWHS - Listing of purposes and aims of the
Society
Membership - All memberships will be described - membership
application forms and referral forms for new applicants
will be available for downloading - in due coarse, all members
will be listed
Historical Artifacts - List of artifacts that are being
sought by the LWHS (particularly photographs/postcards)
- procedures, forms, and waivers governing donations and
loans will be available for downloading.
Heritage Interviews - Family Geneological Reporting Forms
will be available for downloading - forms should be valuable
for those who are beginning the reconstruction of a family
tree - the LWHS hopes to collect these member generated
family trees and establish a genealogical data base at the
Museum for use by the members who are compiling family histories.
2006 - Bicentennial - the developing calendar for 2006 -
the celebration of the community's bicentennial - we welcome
suggestions.
Newsletter - We intend to publish the Society's Quarterly
Newsletter on this Web Site. For those members who do not
have web access or prefer not to download it or read it
online - we will, of course, provide mailed hard copies.
However, if any member prefers to download the newsletter
or read it on line, please inform us by email: lilly@l-whs.com
so that we can save postage and handling.
History in the Making - Since history is being made constantly,
the LWHS intends to collect and preserve the "now"
which will be history to future generations. Here will be
recorded what the LWHS has recently accomplished, what it
is currently doing, and what it intends to do.
Contact the LWHS - Members will be able to contact the LWHS
by E-mail: lilly@l-whs.com with questions, comments, and
suggestions.
Links - Members will be able to click on to other related
sites. We are exploring the possibility of hosting the ads
and announcements of local businesses and organizations.
Note: The website is a work in progress - please bear with
us.
Peace,
Jim Salony

Financial
Conditions as I see it
by: Don George, Treasurer LWHS
We presently have $11,860 in our General Fund and $1,600 in
our Bicentennial Fund. As you may or may not know, the Bicentennial
Fund is a separate fund we have established to cover the expenses
of our Bicentennial celebration in 2006, and these funds will
be held separately for the specific purpose of funding bicentennial
activities. Essentially, we are serving as leader/coordinator
of our community's bicentennial celebration and any fund we
have earmarked for that occasion should not be confused with
our general fund which we need to fund the historical society's
operation.
While our general fund appears to be healthy, we have some
concerns that you may feel we have more than an adequate supply
of money for the future, but such is not the case. For openers,
we estimate that we will need approximately $1,000 to set
up bronze plaques to acknowledge donors, and an additional
$3,600 to fund approximately three dozen historical markers.
Our anticipated "home" will obviously cost a lot
of money, but we are still in a wild state of flux in trying
to plan for that eventually. The news expenditures for a temporary
office and display area in the borough building while we worked
to get another building upgraded to our needs/desires. Very
recent good news is that the $3,000 estimate may be way too
high; but this is counter-balanced by news that the building
we anticipated using for our permanent home is not in practical
condition for upgrading/remodeling. One way or the other,
we will be extremely reliant on grants and/or donated time/labor,
but in the interim it appears obvious we will still need funds
approximating $5,000 to do some of the "base" work
to get these projects going. In other words, while the $3,000
estimate for our "temporary" home may be high, we
may have to look at more significant changes in our "temporary"
home or more significant acquisition costs is finding a more
permanent location.
At any rate, we are estimating $7,000 to $9,000 just to establish
a home, acknowledge donors, and mark historical sites. We
also will need a good computer system that we estimate will
cost approximately $2,000 and display cases, etc. for our
display room which we also estimate to cost around $2,000.
Thus we are looking at costs well in excess of $11,000 and
we haven't even discussed operating costs. Based on this year's
performance to date, it is estimated that printing and postage
alone will approximate $1,000. Government filiing fees and
membership in related organizations could also exceed $1,000.
Because we have not really set up a "shop" at this
point, it is difficult to estimate operating costs, but as
any household would know, it is not difficult to envision
at least several thousand dollars a year for insurance and
utilities. And finally, none of these estimates include technical
equipment (recorders, cameras, etc.) that we would like to
have to support interviews. While it appears fairly obvious
that we could easliy exceed $15,000 in expenditures over the
next few years, it is extremely important to remember that
much of what we have acquired to date is a result of one-time
gifts, such as memorial donors. So while we look at a fairly
large stream of expenditures arising in the future, we really
see a significantly reduced cash inflow in that same future.
We know that much of what we would like to accomplish will
be through grant monies, but it is important that you know
we will continue to need funds for our operating costs if
we are to be successful.
History
Book - Lilly Borough/Washington Township - 1806-2006
We intend to publish this History Book in time for Christmas
giving 2005. To that end, we have established several committees
to research and "work up" specific areas of the
community's history:
Education - chaired by Jan Nadolsky - We are looking for photos
of the seven Township schools (Behe, Robine, Riley, Scanlon
Hill, Stroheimer, Moshannon, Brown) - the Borough Schools
(before the High School was built in 1916) - the wooden school
that stood on the site of the High School - the "chicken
coops" - and as described in one old monograph "The
first public school was a one-room building on the site of
the present Polish Cemetery." We are also trying to track
down the large senior class composite photos that hung around
the central foyer of the old High School. Thanks to Mary Jean
Segada, we have the composite of the class of 1943, and leads
on two others. We also need copies of the smaller versions
of these composites that were given to graduates. For the
reunion of all graduates of Lilly High and Lilly-Washington
High, we would like to have a photo of each graduating class.
Can you help?
Athletics - chaired by Hugh Conrad - We have a good selection
of photos of High School Athletic teams (would still like
to look at others) - but in all other areas of community sports
we need photos and news accounts. What can you share in areas
like: bowling, boccie, golf, tennis, billiards, pool, club
sports, women in sports, Legion teams, little league, grade
school football and basketball teams, tournaments, and championships.
What about hunting, fishing, trapping, trophies, records,
and stories?
Local Government (Councils, Boards, and Mayors) - chaired
by Richard Sweeney - Much of the documentation of this area
has been lost over the years, some by a fire at the old Borough
Building. We need newspaper articles and family memoirs. We
would like to have a picture of each person who has served
as Mayor or served on the Councils over the years. Can you
help?
Coal Mining - chaired by Barry Walters - We want to locate
and mark all the Coal Mines that were located in the Borough
and the Township. We have begun to research the existing early
maps of the area and gather antidotal evidence regarding the
early mines. We need photos of the old mines, miners, and
mining operations.
We will be forming other committees to work on specific areas
of community history:
Cultural - (lifestyle, artists, authors, libraries, newspapers,
music, and theatre)
Professionals - (doctors, dentists, lawyers, bankers, etc.)
Businesses - (lumbering, farming, manufacturing, merchandizing,
and service)
Utilities - (sewers, water, and electricity)
Organizations - (War Memorial, Fire Company, Ambulance Service,
Scouts, VFW, American Legion, GBU, PNA, Sokols, Victor Emmanual
III)
Which committee would you like to work with and/or supply
relevant materials to?
ORAL HISTORY OF HERITAGE MEMBERS
We have begun the recorded interviews of Heritage (80 years
of age or older) Members. The recorded interviews mine the
memories, opinions, and insights of the Heritage Members as
they review their "growing up" years in the Lilly
Area.
The
Lilly Borough Council has given over the second floor of the
Borough Building for use by the LWHS. Operation Outreach (Directed
Prisoner Labor), the organization that remodeled the first
floor of the Borough Building, will modify (they supply the
labor, we supply the materials) the second floor to provide
the LWHS with office space for our yet-to-be acquired computer
system, storage space for historical artifacts we acquire
for the museum, and a large open area we can use for displays.
Work should begin in December. We would like to thank "Doodles"
George for her donation of office equipment/supplies.
Good News - The last lien on the "House of Steins"
is about to be waived; giving the Borough clear title. Bad
News - When the Operation Outreach Director was in town to
plan the remodeling of the second floor of the Borough Building,
he looked at the "House of Steins" to see if it
was suitable to be remodeled into the LWHS Museum. His initial
reaction (based on superficial examination) was that too much
environmental damage had been done to the foundation and the
structure to allow for a successful rehab. Before we can make
a final decision, a structural engineer must examine the building.
we have begun to distribute the Family Genealogy
Reporting Forms (available on our website for downloading).
Forms should be valuable for those who are beginning the reconstruction
of a family tree. The LWHS hopes to collect these member-generated
family trees and establish a genealogical data-base at the
Museum for use by the members who are compiling family histories.
Sponsors
for 2006 - the Bicentennial Year
The Lilly-Washington Historical Society has assumed the responsibility
for making the Year 2006 - (the bicentennial year of the establishment
of this area as a designated legal entitiy) - a memorable
one where in we commemorate and honor our ancestors and the
history of our community.
We have proposed a budget of $20,000 to fund the events of
the bicentennial year. Twelve sponsors have come forward and
pledged $400 a year for four years: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006
to provide our $20,000 budget. Those twelve sponsors are:
The Borough of Lilly - Washington Township - Lilly Area Ambulance
Association - Lilly-Washington War Memorial Association -
Lilly Beverage - Sokol Club - Gall's Insurance Agency - Thomas
F. Cloherty Funeral Home - American Legion - J. Cyran Construction
- First National Bank of Lilly - The Myers Families (E. Myers
Cemetery Care - HWZ Coal Yard & Supply). All members of
the community owe these sponsors a vote of thanks and a pledge
of patronization for their community spirit. Each other organization
and business in the local area will be offered the opportunity
to support other bicentennial projects as they are identified.
The LWHS will acknoledge these twelve sponsors throughout
the Calendars of 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, and will designate
one month each year where each will be inidividually identified.
The LWHS will publish a hard-bound 250+ page Bicentennial
History Book for Christmas 2005. Each of the twelve sponsors
will have a full-page acknoledgement in the History Book.
Beverly Mandicah was the cheif recruiter of sponsors and we
thank her for her tireless effort that made this whole project
successful.

CALENDAR - 2003
We delievered the "paste-up" draft of the calendar
to the publisher on October 2, expect a proof on October 12,
and delivery of the finial 1000 copies before the end of the
month. Bob Monahan, who ably chaired the Calendar Committee,
was greatly aided in the artistic layout by Tony Sabol. Most
of the other directors contributed time, ideas, and photos
- as did many other members, in particular we thank Barry
Walters for his technical assistance. (Note - Tony Sabol and
Barry Walters have been appointed to the Board of Directors).
We are quite proud of our first effort and trust that all
the members of the Society will find the calendar satisfactory.
The 2003 Calendar features a full-colored cover showing an
adaptation of "Historic Lilly" a print by Scott
Steberger, and an historical photo from the area for each
of the twelve months. The subject of the photos range from
the 1927 Lilly High School Girl's Basketball Team to an inside
shot of the Lilly Heat, Light, and Steam Plant from 1906.
The LWHS intends to produce similar Historic Calendars for
2004, 2005, and 2006; as well as a History of the area for
2006. We need old photos (postcards are great) of the area's
people, places, and things: teams, parades, festivals, street
scenes, clubs, or whatever else would help illustrate our
community's history. We, of course, accept donations of photos
for the Society's permanent collection, but we welcome the
loan of any photos that we can copy and return. Please let
us know what photos you have. Notification form enclosed.
Ordering Calendars - 2003 LWHS Calendars will be available
the first week of November. Each LWHS member (Household Memberships
are considered a single member in this case) may purchase
one calendar for $1.00 - plus a dollar postage if it is to
be mailed. Additional calendars may be ordered (as Christmas
Gifts?) at $4.00 each plus a dollar postage for each one that
is to be mailed - we will mail gift calendars as directed.
Local members may arrange for home delivery or "pick-up"
their calendars at Gall's Insurance Agency on Main Street,
Lilly - Mon. to Fri - 9:00am to 4:00pm - after November 1,
2002. (An Order Form for 2003 Calendars is enclosed.) Please
order your calendars - today!
