HELP

The L-WHS intends to publish a History Book covering the history of our community for the last 200 years, 1806 – 2006, for Christmas 2005. We have been working on the history for two years and are making good progress. We want everyone to realize that this is a once in a 200-year effort. We will never be in a position to do a better job. Much artifact and documentation have disappeared – if indeed they ever existed – and more is disappearing every day.

WE want to be sure we acknowledge – and honor – every person, family, business and organization that played any important part in the development of our Community. When the book is published, we want to be in a position of not having to be asked the question: Why wasn‘t my grandpa mentioned? Or Why wasn’t I asked to comment on that event? More importantly, our concern is not just that we avoid offending you by not including your family’s contribution to the history of our community, but we believe, it is a real disservice you do to the whole process by not sharing with your fellow Community members a rich part of their heritage.

YOU still have time to help – but this is the last time we will be able to reach all our members to ask for their help. PLEASE take time to read through the categories where we need more data – check what you can provide – and get it to us as early as you can.

If requested, we can copy ANY photos or printed/written material and get the originals back to you immediately. We will look at any photographs – just because you may think we don’t want a photo of Uncle Herman – he may be standing in front of Bierley’s Store – and we don’t have a photo of the store – so please check your photos carefully.

PHOTOS WE NEED:

Township Schools: Behe, Stommer (Level-old and new), Brown, Moshannon

Town Schools: Chickencoops – First school on Washington St. – Wooden school on the

corner of Washington and Main streets that the brick school replaced

Recreational Spots: B.A.B. swimming hole, the slides, any of the poolrooms ( inside or

outside shots), the downtown, Bakertown and Dutchtown playgrounds,

tennis courts at Spruce park and behind St. Brigid’s Church etc.

Clubs: VFW, American Legion, GBU, PNA, Sokols, Victor Emmanual III (Italian halls -

Old and new – Inside and outside shots – members – activities -STINEY’S!!

Events: parades, organizational picnics, community events etc.

Coal Mines: any identified local mines, tipples, mine cars, any identified miners at work

or at home in work clothes.

WE NEED RECOLLECTIONS OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY – Lilly Borough/Washington Township. Please take time to record a memory of some person (or family), business, organization, church, or school - such as:

Growing up in the community during: The 1910’s and 1920’s – The 1920’s and

1930’s – The 1930’s and 1940’s – The 1940’s and 1950’s – The 1950’s

and 1960’s - 1960’s and 1970’s – The 1970’s and 1980’s – The 1980’s and

1990’s - or any 20 year period i.e. 1954 to 1974.

You might want to include:

Your parents’ origin and related dates – data re: your siblings and broader family

The "section of town" you grew up in – The Level, Hunky Hill, Stumptown, Lilly Coal, Dutchtown, Lower Dutchtown, Veigletown, Barkertown, Dogtown, the Mountain, Scanlon Hill, Noel’s Creek, the Country and what that meant to you.

The Church(s) and school(s) you attended – the organizations to which you belonged (teams-clubs etc.) and the related activities you participated in and the people with whom you associated? How you spent your leisure time, jobs, etc.

As you probably have surmised from reading the contents of the preceding pages, our collective energy for the last two years (with a big push in the last six months) has been largely expended in researching The History Of Our Community. It will require six more months of intensive work to finance, research, write, layout, publish and distribute The 300+ page History of Our Community – 1806-2006 - by Christmas of 2005. The July News Letter will provide order forms for early sale discount price for the History Book.

There are only about two dozen volunteer L-WHS members in total – (with fewer than five working at what seems like full-time employment) – attempting to carry out ALL the projects of our historical society. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The different aspects of Our Historical Society require diverse means of support from its members. In This Organization every member can play a role. The L-WHS needs each of you - to help in whatever way you can – (through your contribution of time – talent – treasure) to memorialize the past, and preserve the "history" of your hometown.

The creation, financing, and sale of Our History Book provide EACH OF YOU with

many opportunities to contribute to its success.

Please review Pages 3 & 4 of this newsletter and SEND US SOMETHING: photo; diary; family history; biography; recollection of growing up in your hometown; of going to the township schools; growing up in the family of a coal miner, a railroader, a farmer, a mill worker, a garment industry worker, a businesses owner, manager or clerk. Also send along copies of the "Lilly Signal," The High School "Flash," "Tattler" and Yearbooks. Anything!, that will help us create the Best and Most complete History Book possible. PLEASE – DO IT NOW!

Please review Pages C& D and take this opportunity to incorporate a specific aspect of your family’s heritage into this History of Our Community. PLEASE DO IT NOW!

Memorialize–Remember–Acknowledge – someone dear to you in Our History Book

At 5:00 pm. Saturday, May 7, Mother’s Day Eve, 2005, the L-WHS will dedicate a monument honoring "THE NOBILITY OF WOMAN" at the corner of Main and Cleveland Streets. The monument, by local artist Scott Steberger, depicting the many faces of area women’s contributions to the development of Our Community, was funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Commission and a grant secured through the office of Rep.Gary Halushka. Please join us for the celebration and light refreshments.

On Memorial Day Morning, 2005, at the Lilly Washington War Memorial Field, the

L-WHS will add to the monument the names of twenty-seven civil war soldiers and two World War II soldiers, from the area, who were killed during the wars. A Civil War Re-enactors Band will bivouac, provide the honor guard, and stage a concert of Civil War era music.

Please plan to join us in celebrating a significant event in Our History.

Jack Barlick was totally responsible for the research that unearthed the names of the previously unrecognized heroes. He worked with the Lilly American Legion to provide the name plaques, arranged the program and worked to fund it. A Great example of what One Member of the L-WHS can do. Congratulations, Jack - and thank you for providing such a great example to all our members.

- GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY – VOLUNTEER! -

Jack, like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps on going. He is currently compiling the Military Chapter for our History Book and has contributed the sections on the Area Ambulance Association’s and Fire Company’s history.

In each of his 2005 weekly "Mainliner" columns, "Lilly Lines" (now on line at: l-whs.com) Jack is featuring the story of an area veteran. In a few years the L-WHS intends to publish Jack’s book that will chronicle the biographies of 1200+ area veterans of all "wars" since the War of 1812.

Jack is also spearheading the plans for Memorial Day, 2006. The L-WHS is planning to dedicate a monument honoring Company A of the 55th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was organized here by Colonel Richard A. White of Washington Township. A program, parade and encampment of Civil War Re-enactors are planned.

______________________

Recently, we were fortunate in recruiting an unbelievably enthusiastic "Heritage Committee" to begin organizing the second floor of the Borough Building in to what we are calling "The Heritage Room" (instead of "Museum" which we consider too pretentious a title for that which we hope to create.) Mike and Betty Phillips, Jim and Linda Behe, and Jim and Ann McCabe have begun the archiving process with a through cleaning of the facility, a trashing of the clutter, and a cataloguing of the treasures.

Some of the treasures we have include: about twenty trophies from Lilly Hi; hundreds of photos, including many of sport teams and seven of the large high school graduation class composites that hung around the first floor balcony of the old yellow-brick Lilly Hi; a half dozen Lilly-Hi school/sports-jackets/uniforms: a restored cast iron PRR Caboose Stove: several PRR lanterns; eight vintage miner’s lamps, a few local named advertising items, a crank telephone, some old farm implements, and miscellaneous local items.

The donor(s) of all these items will be acknowledged in the display cases.

We hope to have the displays organized for the Grand Opening in February of 2006, coincident with the First Major Event of the Bicentennial Year – The 200th Birthday of the establishment of Dundee, the tract from which Washington Township and Lilly Borough developed.

ALAS! – WE NEED MANY MORE OF YOUR TREASURES. PLEASE SHARE WITH THE L-WHS ANY OF THE ITEMS LISTED ON PAGES 3 & 4 OF THIS NEWS LETTER (AND ANY OTHER ITEMS THAT WILL HELP US TELL THE HISTORY OF OUR COMMUNITY) FOR DISPLAY IN OUR HERITAGE ROOM.
