As I am writing this on the Ides of March the weather outside is calm. Is in like a lamb a good sign for the coming month?
DIXIE LAND
I had the opportunity this past week to tour the Deep South along with my two sons, John and Steve, who had a project to do at Fort Benning, Georgia. Having last been at Fort Benning in 1965 I jumped at the chance to see how it has evolved over the years,
The trip down took 27 hours as we first went to Harrisburg and then south west to Nashville, Tennessee to pick up some material for their job. Then down through Chattanooga, were Lookout Mountain can be found. This is where General Geary of local fame defeated a Confederate force but lost a son in a battle there.
Once we left Virginia and entered Tennessee the signs of snow vanished. There was no snow to be seen in Georgia or in South and North Carolina (except on mountain tops) on the way home either. Coming north through Virginia old snow was scattered through the fields, it wasn’t until West Virginia that we witnessed the latest snow buildups. The only bad road conditions encountered in the 800 plus miles from Columbus Georgia to home were from the bottom of the mountain at Duncansville until home in Lilly.
The trip re-enforced my belief that we in this area are getting ripped off royal by the large convenience chains in our area. Gas was as low as 2.40 a gallon, averaging in the 2.53 range all over the south and then coming in to Blair and Cambria County it was 2.75 a gallon.
Traveling the Interstates doesn’t do much justice for seeing the south. You have to get on some side roads to really appreciate the scenery. All you see on the Interstates are pine trees, shopping malls and a few factories. Georgia is known as the Peach State but the only peach farm I saw was in South Carolina.
BLOOD MOBILE
Don’t forget the Knights of Columbus sponsored Blood Mobile on Friday, March 5, at the Lady of the Alleghenies Hall from noon until 6 pm.
