SKATING RINK

The War Memorial Association was awaiting the materials for the skating rink when I checked with Ron Muldoon on Sunday. They expected them the next day and weather permitting hope to have it up and running on January 30th.

AMBULANCE

The Lilly Area Ambulance Association recently received a three year advanced life support license which is valid until 2013. The super efforts of Natalie-Barlick Reed, Duane Misiura, Kevin Hite, George Nesbella, John Behe, Fred Kline, Linda Conley, Mark Behe, Betty Behe, Dave Behe, Mike Eckenrode, Paul Sklodowski and a few others made this possible.

MISTAKE

I did not credit John Prebish as being nominated for vice-president of the War Memorial Association for 2010, the position he currently holds.

JUNE of 2011

June of 2011 may sound far off, but it is really only 18 months from now. That’s is when the Lilly/Washington Historical Society intends to host a giant homecoming weekend to recognize the 180th anniversary of Washington Township, the 90th anniversary of the Lilly American Legion and the 75th anniversary of the Lilly Community Fire Company that followed the Citizens Fire Company.

Firemen’s week will be going on with a parade on Friday, there will be a breakfast program and field day on Saturday, July 2nd, and a tour of the clubs with musical programs that evening. Sunday, July 3 will feature a community picnic, Music by the Fabulous Flashbacks and Fireworks,

This would be a great weekend in 2011 to schedule class reunions and family reunions here in Lilly.

SYMPATHY

The sympathy of the community is extended to the family and friends of Robert Tickerhoof who passed away last week. Bob was well known in the area. He had been a staff manager with the American General Life Insurance Company for many years. He also served on both the Lilly/Washington and Penn Cambria School Boards at the time of the school mergers in the 1960’s. Bob also was a Lilly Borough councilman.

BULL ELK

Mark Przybys showed me a great picture he had taken Sunday morning, January 24th along the Cresson- Loretto Road. It was a large bull elk along side the road. Moose Sweeney then related the story of the bull elk shot illegally on the Lilly Mountain by an out of town hunter and a doe being shot, allegedly for crop damage, soon after in Upper Dutchtown.

This was back before WW2 when an attempt was made to re- introduce elk to the area. They originally were brought in by train and then placed on the mountain.

At the turn of the 1900’s before strong game laws the deer herd was completely wiped out in the area from over hunting. The deer you see today are white tail descendants of West Virginia deer brought here to establish a herd. Michigan deer were tried but did not adapt to this area.

VETERANS

The WW2 veterans I am trying to track this week are Joseph J. Yanik, Michael Yanik, James Zaber and Edward Zella. Next week I will list some Korean War veterans. A computer glitch cost me 30 pages of typing which I am trying to re-do.

GROUNDHOG DAY

Tuesday, February 2nd is Ground Hog Day. It is that time of year for the alcohol inspired

Self made weathermen up in Punxsutawney to disturb the little ground hog once again. They could save their time; the true weather report for the 2nd is rain with no sunshine showing. This in groundhog lore suggests an early end to winter.
