SOUP SALE
With this cold weather nothing is more welcome than a bowel of hot soup. This weekend you can get your choice of either chicken noodle or beef vegetable soup and also chili at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel National Catholic Church from 9 AM until 1 PM at $5 a quart.
ERROR
I am prone to error in this cold weather. Maybe I should wear a hat more to keep the brain from freezing. Last week I was wrong on Sophie Adelsberg’s address and occupation. It was pointed out to me by a faithful reader that she worked at the sewing factory in Lilly and her sister Betty Duke worked at the high school cafeteria and her correct address is 230 Yale Ave. Elyria, Ohio 44035 Sophie will be 102 on January 29th.
COAL MINING
I know that a big goal of Jim Salony for the Lilly Washington Historical Society is a fitting monument to the coal miners of the Lilly area. This is a worthy goal as there is a very, very rich history of mining in the area.
In researching World War One and Two veterans I am finding that a vast majority of these veterans were coal miners and also their fathers were coal miners. Many local mining company names pop up like the Leahey Coal Company, the Shoemaker mines, the W.H. Piper Coal Co, the Bob Smith mine etc.
During World War One many of those who would become veterans were working for the Shoemaker Coal Company at Mashannon when they registered for the draft. Those men walked to work each day either along the Dutchtown Road, down the tracks through the “hollow” or across the tracks from Scanlon Hill and Mashannon. Others came from Cassandra.
The fruit trees in Lower Dutchtown were allegedly grown from the cores of apples and pears discarded as they walked along.

SYMPATHIES
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Agnes (Harriton) Simala who recently passed away. She was born in Beaverdale and married Joseph Simala and lived in Lilly for years before building in Cresson Township. A daughter Marian lives in Cresson.
Sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of Lee Nadolsky who passed away in Maryland on January 7th. Lee was the youngest child of Michael and Blanche Nadolsky and a grandson of Michalina and Frank Nadolsky. His sister Barbara and brother Jan reside in Lilly. He also has brothers Tony, Julian and Richard. He is survived by his wife Sharon and daughters Cyndi and Sheila. He also has step-children.
Lee played on the first little league in Lilly in 1950 and also played four years for the Raider football team of Lilly High. He also was a member and starter on the Raiders Basketball squad that played in the State Championship C finals in Reading in 1959. Lee was always a Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State football fan.
Sympathy also is extended to the family and friends of John J. Waksmunski who died on January 10th. John was a World War Two army veteran and a well decorated hero of the fighting in the Rhineland.
