BLOODMOBILE
There will be a Blood Mobile sponsored by the Lilly Knights of Columbus at the Lady of the Alleghenies Church hall on March Friday 5th from 12 noon until 6 pm.
THANKS AGAIN
Last week, the Lilly Library Board thanked Mickey Arnold formerly of Scanlon Hill for his $180 dollar donation to replace the stolen Disney movies. This week the Board is pleased to announce that Beth Holsberger Carlson and her family from Andover, Massachusetts donated four more Disney movies to the Lilly Library after reading this column. Beth is the daughter of John and Elaine Holsberger of Lilly.
Soon all of the classics will again be available to the library patrons for their use free of charge. The Library Board is very grateful to these former residents for their kindness.
SKATING
I stopped by the ice skating rinks Friday evening and was delighted to see how many adults and children were using the rinks. There was a little bonfire going and hot Chocolate on hand to take the edge off of the cold evening. I rate this project designed and built by the Lilly War Memorial’s dedicated volunteer staff an overwhelming success. The Lilly American Legion Post 628 funding helped greatly in getting the project completed.
The Legion goes all out to help the community. Veterans are ask to join the American Legion and be a part of this community support team, All others over age 21 can join the social club and help out too.
LOUISIANA BIRDS
Jim Yingling tells me that the gold finches are disappearing from Louisiana as they start north (They better take it slow). He promises to let me know when the robins depart their southern roosts. That should be a good sign of a coming spring.
SYMPATHY
The deepest sympathy of the community is extended to the family and friends of George Puglise who died last week. George was a much decorated real hero of World War 2. He was one of the 5th Rangers in the second wave onto the Normandy beaches on D Day and scaled the cliffs at Omaha Beach to take out the enemy forces on top.
George and his unit fought their way across Northern France and he was wounded when the Rangers were attempting to take the German Submarine Base at Brest, France. They accomplished their mission after a very difficult fight.
BIRTHDAY VISITOR
Vernita Kaminsky had a very enjoyable birthday on February 18th. Her son, Doctor Michael Kaminsky came to Lilly to visit on her special day. He came from London, England were he teaches at the University of London. Needless to say, he was surprised by all the snow here.Vernita has been to London on her sons July 18th birthday in the past.
BIRTHDAYS
Celebrating their birthdays today, February 25th are Ella Digruilles, Christy Offman and Thomas Suchta. On the 26th Pamela Sanders and Bonnie Guzic celebrate as will Jamie Russian, Jaed Semindinger and Andrea Siedlarczyk on the 27th. Bill Conley Jr. celebrates on the 28th.
On March 1 Beverly Costlow, Maya Lutton, Frances Albarano, Maddox Laret, Breann Latoche, Joe Mardula, Julia Myers and Mary Jo Rainey celebrate their birthdays as will Ken Brown, Tyler Condon, Shelby Franey and Darren Reffner on the 3rd. Happy Birthday to All.
VETERANS
I was pleased to hear from June Hermsdorfer of Sandyville, West Virginia. She formerly resided on Jones Street. June called with a wealth of information on her husband Jim, his dad Carl, and her sons all who were veterans. These calls mean so much to the success and completion of the book. I am always looking for a story to add so please call, at present count I have 2282 veterans on the books list with some information collected on about 1900 of them on 400 pages of Microsoft (This should shrink to about 300 pages book size). I hope to wrap up the writing part by the end of April, then its putting the pictures in place, proof reading and off to the printer.
PIE SALE
The Lilly Fire Company Auxiliary is conducting a Pie Sale at this time. Orders can be placed until March 1st by calling Theresa Dunmyer at 886-8720 or Pam Sanders at 736-3015, There is a large variety of pies from the Portage Bakery including: Lemon, Coconut and Chocolate Meringue, peach, apple, sugar free apple, blue berry, raisin and cherry. Also cinnamon rolls are available. Pick up will be March 13th from 9 am until 12 noon at the fire hall.
TELEMARKETERS
We all get pitches from telemarketers claiming to represent this or that charity. I usually just hang up anymore. I get particularly irked at the ones claiming to do this or that for firemen and policemen. Having spent years involved with both groups locally, believe me, none of those donations come back to this or surrounding areas.
It is much better to give your donations locally where 100% of the money is used for the organizations operating expense or improvement. Some of the local groups deserving of support are the fire company, ambulance service, library, War Memorial Association, youth sports groups and your church.
