WAGON TRAIN
This weekend the Appalachian Wagon Train will be coming to town for a few days and setting up camp at Bev Mandichaks farm on the Lilly Mountain. They will arrive Saturday and take a trip Sunday down through Mashannon, Scanlan Hill, Benscreek and Cassandra.
On Monday morning you will be able to watch the horses and wagons at 8 AM or a few minutes later as they come down Piper Street, over the bridge to Barkertown, up George Street to Noels Creek and on to Loretto. They will return later in the day across Country Club Road, down the Level Road and back to the mountain campground.
They will break camp Tuesday morning again at 8 AM, come down Piper Street, up Willow Street to the Level and Cresson Township crossing the Country Club to Route 53 and up Forest Street in Gallitzin as they head through Coupon to Ashville.
On Sunday and Monday evenings the public is welcome to spend the evening around the campfire on the Lilly Mountain. Bring a lawn chair and the young children along. They will enjoy a memorable experience.
Beverley Mandichak, Secretary of the Lilly/Washington Historical Society and her daughter LeAnn McConnell are preparing a dinner compliments of several local sponsors for the train members. Also Bev deserves a lot of credit for helping the Appalachian Wagon Train with a camping spot after the National Park Service backed out as this years sponsor. The Lilly/Washington Historical Society took over sponsorship for this year.
FIREMEN’S WEEK
Soon after the horses and wagons leave town, Garbrick Amusements will be setting up their rides for the Firemen’s Carnival at the Pavilion to run Tuesday, June 22nd until Saturday the 26th. Events at the grounds will start at 7 PM each evening and there will be a parade on Friday evening lining up at the War Memorial field parking lot.
SYMPATHY
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Lucinda (Albarano) Frasca of Windber who passed away June 10th; she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Lucinda was born in Lilly on May 7, 1916 and was a daughter of Felix and Consiglio Albarano who raised a large family in Lilly and operated the Albarano Store here in Lilly.
I attended a wake on June 10th in Monroeville of my mother’s first cousin, Alice Waltz. Alice was 89 and the daughter of Lilly natives Arthur and Kati (Bost) George who had re-located to Pitcairn when Art worked on the railroad. Alice and her sister Rita Schmidt and their families were in town for the bi-centennial and enjoyed the wagon train and the George Seminar held then.
MONEY-RAMA
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will host a Money-rama at the Hilltop Pavilion on June 27th from 1 to 5 PM. Tickets are on sale for $20 by calling 886-2375 or 886-2740. This gives you a chance on $2000 in cash prizes, door prizes, a Country Fried Dinner, Adult refreshments and Music.
ARTS AND CRAFTS
The Lilly-Washington War Memorial Association is planning an arts and crafts summer program for children 6 to 12 years of age starting in July and running until the last week of August at the War Memorial Pavilion. The program will run Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s from 10 AM until noon.
The group is seeking a responsible adult to supervise and administer the program. It is a compensated position than requires interaction with the children and providing projects in the arts and crafts. If interested call Ron Muldoon at 886-8868.
WELCOME HOME
Frank Klayko is finally home after surgery and rehabilitation. He and his sister Jean were on the porch so I stopped by for conservation on Sunday. Frank was always so active fishing, pitching horseshoes, gardening and cleaning up Piper Street that being laid up from surgery is really a drag on his spirits. Well, by the time hunting season rolls around I hope he is back to normal.
CITY LEAGUE
At the start of this week the Altoona City League entry from Lilly was holding first place in the Wagner Division with a 6-2 record.
