The best news I have to report this week is that the History book is actually at the printers in State College and should be completed by the 1st of December. Nearly 800 copies have been pre-ordered so far so there will be a lot of winter reading going on. I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying this book. Jim Salony put a Herculean effort into this project and deserves accolades for a superb, several year effort. Many members of the community past and present contributed to the final result.

BAND PICTURE

The Lilly/Washington Historical Society was recently given a picture of the 1939 Lilly High School Band. Patti Felus was the kind donator of the picture that includes her older brother John Albarano who played the trumpet.

The band is in full dress uniform in front of the Lilly High School on Main Street and includes 60 musicians, 6 majorettes, the drum major (Tom Sweeney and Miss Barbara Balfaser who is identified as the then political correct feminine title of directress.

SYMPATHY

The sympathy of the community is extended to the family and friends of Mary Kay VanBlargen who recently passed away. Mary Kay was a very active lady in town activities. I recall her as being very involved with the Lilly Legion Auxiliary and also with the Lilly Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.

FLAG FOOTBALL

On Sunday there was Raider football games at the Lilly field. The first game at 11 am was the 6 year old team. A hardy crowd from both Cresson and Lilly braved the rainy weather, many with umbrellas in use, to watch these youngsters play. I had to switch loyalties and rout for the Cresson Indians as my grandson Connor Mento was on their team.

The undefeated Penn Cambria 8th grade football team had a by week as their scheduled opponent could not muster a team this year.

VALEWOOD

From October the 4th through the 19th from 11 am until 5 pm you can take your children and grand children for a visit at Vale Wood Farms, for only a $1 admission the children can have an enjoyable, memorable afternoon. It’s worth the trip to get their great ice cream cones. Fall is a great time to visit the farm with the smell of freshly mowed hay in the air.

Many children today don’t get to see cows up close very often so this is an exciting adventure for them.

In 1962 I was stationed at Fort Knox with a guy from New York City who had never seen a cow in his life until he came to Kentucky. That was hard to imagine as the Smilnak’s next door to Dad’s had always raised cows. But now with the passing of small family farms it is easier to understand.
