The fire company quad run got off to a good start on a rather cool morning this past Sunday. By the time registration concluded there were 255 riders signed up. There are more women riding quads now and also families using the day as an outing. Just a modest appraisal of the value of all the equipment required including pick-up trucks, trailers, ATV’s and riding gear that was here for the event is over $5 million dollars.

The Penn Cambria 8th grade football team continues on its destruction of other teams wiping out Bedford 44-0 this past week. Maybe the Steelers should take lessons from them.

ST. LUKE’S

A visit to the open house at St. Luke’s this past Sunday was a very nice time. The parishioners are proud of the outcome of the many hours of labor required to update the kitchen, chapel and class room. Vic Costlow pointed out the improvements to the kitchen and also explained how he and 7 other parish members got the massive 700 pound gas stove in place in the basement after offloading it from a truck. There was a delicious light buffet set out for visitors and it required second’s to enjoy it all.

A parishioner brought it to my attention that Rev. John Palko is celebrating his 30th year in the ministry. He was ordained on September 15th, 1978 and his first calling was to the East Kishacoquillas Lutheran Parish made up of St. John’s in Siglerville and St. Paul’s Evangelical in Milroy. Next he was assigned to St. Matthew’s in Martinsburg for 10 years and then interim pastor at the New Centerville church before being named pastor for 6 years following that he went to Johnstown as the interim pastor for St. John’s and Zion Lutheran churches.

On February 1 of 2002 Rev. Palko was called to serve the Lilly Portage Parish of St. Luke’s and Portage First Lutheran churches. This parish back then probably never realized what a dedicated pastor they were getting. He went right to work and hasn’t stopped since. Since he arrived the stone fence has been repaired, the major underground pipelines were replaced, the kitchen had cabinets installed, the classroom and chapel were renovated and the costliest project, restoration of the large stain glass windows was accomplished.

All this effort speaks well of the Reverends leadership and the hard work and dedication of the church members who are proud of their church and its history. St. Luke’s was organized on June 22, 1873 when Lilly was still known as Hemlock The church we know today was dedicated on June, 18, 1905.

THOUGHTS

Summer has officially ended and we now can enjoy the fall colors before getting in the panic mode over the coming winter. If any year has given people ulcers this has to be the one with the outrageous increases in heating fuels and vehicle fuel, the stock market making spaghetti out of pension funds, the seemingly endless wars abroad and the government going deeper and deeper in debt bailing out the financial crooks and manipulators not to forget the endless bad mouthing of national politics as the election nears. Take me back to the 50’s when everything seemed much simpler.
