Chronicles of Our Home and Heritage Newsletter Vol. VII - Issue II

CHRONICLE of OUR HOME AND HERITAGE

Volume VII – Issue II                October – 2009

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

TO ALL THOSE WHO HAD HELPED IN ANY WAY TO PRODUCE THE SPIRIT OF A COMMUNITY.

In June, your editor submitted 6 copies of Our History to the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Societies (over 1,400 organizations are members) for judging. I was somewhat reluctant to submit “The Spirit” – because of the broadness of the category for “An Award of Merit” which included anything of historical significance from large museum projects, to movies, to restorations – in other words some “big” competition.  I knew the awards were given in the fall and in early October, having heard nothing from the Federation – and needing the copies of the History Book we had given them for review (since we had sold out all the copies of The Spirit of a Community that we had – and 4 of the 6 copies we had sent to the Federation for judging – more later on this) I was prepared to call and ask for a return of our books – that day a letter arrived informing me that the L-WHS had been given an Award of Merit. I, of course, was elated – until I reread the letter 2 days later – I had not noticed “AN” Award of Merit – indicating more than one award had been given. My first thought -Was this like elementary school football ?  - where everyone gets a trophy.

So I called Janet MacGregor who chaired the judging. She told me that there had been 21 submissions in all categories and that there had been 16 finalists in our group – Award of Merit. And indeed there had been more than one Award of Merit. But after hearing the details, I am just as happy that we were not the sole winner – where there would have been the possibility that we were simply the least worst ! – There were two Awards of Merit given. The L-WHS received one and the other went to an $18, 000, 000 project for a museum renovation. – We were indeed in good company – and I think that made the award just that much more meaningful. – We will be presented the Award of Merit on November 9th.

THE SPIRIT OF A COMMUNITY –IS SOLD OUT – The L-WHS will act as broker for anyone who wants to buy or sell a copy of The Spirit – if and when someone wants to get rid of a copy. Send your request to buy or sell to: History Book – 417 Cleveland Street – Lilly, PA 15938 – we will match up willing buyers and sellers – in the order received – and allow the respective parties to “complete their own deal.”  Remember when mailing “The Spirit” to use – “Media Mail.”

                                        CONCERNING L-WHS MEMBERSHIP

For 2010 we are making some changes in our membership listings. We will no longer have categories of annual memberships. The categories Adult, Sustaining Adult, Household, and Household Sustaining with “annual dues” ranging from $5 to $30 will no longer be used. Instead we will ask each annual member for a donation in an amount of their choice ($5 minimum please) to renew an annual membership. Each name on the membership list will receive a renewal form in February of 2010 – please respond as soon as possible. We are still in need of someone to assume complete responsibility for membership list updates. If you have basic computer literacy and a little free time, please consider volunteering for this important position – the L-WHS (& your editor) needs help. Please contact Jim Salony at 814-886-7282 – or salonyt@yahoo.com.

Please give us your new address when you move. We have several dozen newsletters returned because of wrong address every time we send out a newsletter. With return postage and remailing- cost is $1.+ each.
