OUR HOME AND HERITAGE
L-WHS Volume VIII – Issue I February – 2010
Belated Happy New Year to all those who call Lilly “home.”
See pages 3-4 – Memberships – We are fortunate to have new volunteers to take over our Membership
and address records. Please read, complete, and return (ASAP) the relevant forms on pages 3-4 of this
newsletter. When we get the returns from this newsletter, we will update (and keep updated) the listings
of Memberships on our website: l-whs.com (probably by the end of April).
Some on you receiving this newsletter are not current members. You may have ordered a History
Book or calendar or your name may have been submitted by someone – whatever – we would
really like you to join with us in discovering, presenting, and celebrating the fascinating history of
the greater Lilly Area. Please fill out the forms on pages 3-4 and become a member.
See Page 2 – Veterans information. Jack Barlick is compiling massive amounts of information concerning
all military veterans (from the War of 1812 to the present conflicts in the Mid-East) who were connected
“in someway” with the Greater Lilly Area. Jack will edit all this information into a 300-page
book replete with photos – The Military Spirit of a Community. Jack needs your help. Please
complete the form on Page 2 of this newsletter or contact Jack so that YOUR veteran is
not missed.
See Page 5 – We are pleased to announce that we intend to publish The Military Spirit of a Community
(as described above) for the Homecoming Weekend over the 4th of July weekend of 2011. See page 5
for the complete story and for the order form. We encourage you to order (ASAP) as we would like to
have a good count before we place the order so that we can get a good printage rate.
See page 6 (with address label) Good News – It looks as though we have found a printer who will
print additional copies of Our History Book – The Spirit of a Community – 1806 – 2006. As you may
already know, we are sold out of the 1300 copies of “The Spirit.” The new printing (which will be the
same quality as the first two printings) should be available by mid-2010. The price will remain
the same - $53 (including tax) for book to be picked-up at Gall’s Insurance Office on Main Street in Lilly
and $60 for a book to be shipped. See order form for “The Spirit of a Community” on page 6.

LILLY-WASHINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP
Please read this section carefully – as we are making some changes to the membership process that will allow us to streamline the membership list accounting system. Sandy and Butch Miorelli have volunteered to manage the membership accounts. Ron Muldoon will continue as systems consultant. We thank them for their service and include a big thank you to Doodles George who worked with your editor over the last half dozen years in trying to keep the membership address list updated.
Each time we have our mailing of about 900 newsletters, we have an average of 50 address changes. It would be most helpful if any member who is moving would include the L-WHS in the announcements you send out indicating a change of address.
A good number of those receiving this newsletter are not presently a member of the L-WHS, You may never have been a member but are on Our address list because you ordered a History Book, calendar, or other item from the L-WHS – or your name may have been proposed by a current member, or you may have been a member in the past and failed to renew – whatever the case we would love to have you as a member – to become involved in discovering, documenting, and celebrating the fascinating history of the Greater Lilly Area.

The Military Spirit of a Community – 1812 to 2012
A 300+-page volume replete with photos detailing the 200-year history of the Greater Lilly Area’s* 2250 military veterans from the War of 1812 to the present-day conflicts in the Middle East - bound as a companion piece (Volume II if you will) to Our history book, The Spirit of a Community- 1806-2006.
*From the 15938 area code, attended Lilly Hi, born, lived, and/or died in the Greater Lilly Area or was closely related e.g. grandchild – to someone from the Greater Lilly Area.
Jack Barlick is heading this project and is trying to include as much about as many of Our veterans as is humanly possible. Jack needs your help in making this the most complete Military History possible. PLEASE complete a copy of the form on page 2 for each veteran of your family – giving as complete a portrait of each veteran as you can. Photos are a big plus – give Jack a copy of any military photos- especially those showing the person detailed on the form you submit – or lend him a original photo from which he will make a copy and return the original promptly.
Jack has the names and some biographical material on over 2200 local veterans. There is still time to have the military veterans from your family memorialized in –what will be – an elegant history. PLEASE get involved. Call Jack and see what he has on your family’s veterans and what he needs – 814-886- 4964. Don’t be like the dozens of folks who came up to the editor of The Spirit of a Community with the whine: “Why didn’t I put something (a photo, a remembrance, or a memorial) in about my dad (read mum, aunt, granddad, uncle, or cousin.”) Call Jack and/or Fill-out the Form and return it to him NOW !

We plan to publish The Military Spirit of a Community in time for Homecoming over the 4th of July weekend in 2011. Please order your copy/copies as soon as possible so that we can set the number ordered with the publisher in time to get a reasonable printage rate.
